There is something fundamentally wrong about turning to experts to know what foods are good for us and what are bad. I mean, isn’t food supposed to be inherent to life. And haven’t people for centuries before ours been able to determine what foods to eat without the FDA and experts. The experts themselves turn to the successful ancient diets and try to unlock their secrets.
Food has always been a thing of intuition to us. And that makes perfect sense to me. Food is akin to life. Its something we indulge in 2 or 3 or even 6 times and day. And to take notes and scratch our brain for recall just does not make sense.
So now about the intuition bit. I wish it was as simple. With all the colorful options we have today, there is no dearth of confusion for our mind, heart and palate. We have tried to use short cuts to meal preparation by packing, preserving, canning and microwaving. But the reality has become that the more we have tried to cut it short, the more complicated and elongated our decision making process has become. We spend less time preparing food but more time reading and talking about it.
And then the issue of availability. No, I am not talking about the lack of it. But the abundance of it. Sushi is not only a thing of Japan and quinoa has traveled far out of its Peruvian comfort zone. I wish the new flat world had a way of globalizing our tummies.
I am the fool who believes that it is easily possible for us to develop an instinct that tells us what to eat without any external magic mantra. Just good old under-rated logic.
All processed foods are bad, some more than others.
Let’s take this through the test of logic. Our digestive system is essentially a waste management system just like the one we have in the external world. It takes substances, sees what it can use, calls for its assistants – the liver and pancreas to use wisely what it can and carefully addresses foreign substances. So in simple words it recycles, reuses, rebuilds and disposes absolute scrap. The disposal, may I say is in a standard format. No matter what the input, this smart little genius system manages to standardize the output. Some call it feces and some call it poop. What impeccable coding!
When we try to deal with our own garbage at home, its easiest to dispose off organic matter. It all goes in one bin. Its starts disintegrating and shows off its stench as soon as it can. Its the stuff our garbage trucks and compost boxes love. It is instantly embraced by the earth re-create and merges with it like it never enjoyed a separate identity.
What happens to anything else that is not natural, organic matter. Paper or plastic? Or anything else? How hard is the waste management then? It sits there stubbornly refusing to be broken down. Only 10% or less of the plastics can be recycled and some of it takes 1000 years to disintegrate. In the meanwhile, dumping and polluting our environment with its harmful effects. Even something as simple as paper is not very easy to recycle as it is a processed substance. It does not add to life. It threatens it. It is detested by the earth.
Now just think for a minute, we humans, with every possible resource available to us have not successfully been able to disintegrate substances which do not come directly from nature. And even with all our genius, spend billions of dollars into researching what to do with unnatural waste. How can we expect our poor little digestive system to deal with things made in factories? With preservatives and chemicals and synthetic drugs that do not resemble anything in nature. I would go as far to say that what plastic does to the environment, highly processed food does to our bodies.
And by adding preservatives not only are we stopping the natural disintegration process so as we can store substances longer, we are also making the disintegration harder inside our bodies where it needs to happen.
Its simple and logical. Each element in nature can recognize and have a symbiotic relationship with others in the natural universe. Anything processed beyond a certain limit becomes a foreigner and is not welcomed inside or outside of our bodies.
If I had to sum this up, I would say – the more steps it takes to make – the more steps it will take to break!
